MYRTLE RUST

  • As winter is planting time please be aware of Myrtle Rust.  By following these guidelines, we can all play a part in preventing it's spread into the Hauraki Gulf.
  • If residents are bringing myrtles on to Rakino Island, please try to ensure the source nursery is following the NZPPI (New Zealand Plant Producers Incorporated) protocols as outlined above. The nurseries might have signs up.  If they have no signs please ask if they follow NZPPI protocols.
The following native species are members of the Myrtle family:
  • Pohutukawa and Rata (Metrosideros)

  • Swamp maire (Syzygium)

Along with these native species there are also a number of commonly cultivated exotic species:

  • Feijoa

and quite a few other Australian species.
